Redesigning the designs law

Parliament is currently debating changes to our design laws, following an extensive review by the Australian Law Reform Commission ("ALRC").

The Designs Bill 2002 and the Designs (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2002 were introduced into Parliament on 11 December 2002. The Bills were referred to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee on 5 March 2003, and a report was tabled in Parliament on 28 May 2003.

The Senate Economics Legislation Committee recommended the following:

  • that Government should examine any adverse effect on safety standards for spare parts;

  • that the draft Regulations be published as soon as possible; and

  • that the Bill be passed.

The House of Representatives are currently debating the passing of the Bill.
